Review When we were sisters – Beth Miller
11 June 2023

Review When we were sisters – Beth Miller

The novel ‘When we were sisters’ talks about relationships. Relationships between siblings and their parents, friends and broken families. Laura and Miffy, aka known as Melissa, Lissa, Mel and Missy, become good friends when they are small. Best friends forever. At least that’s what you think when you’re about 7 years old.

Close

Laura’s family is Catholic, Miffy’s family is Jewish. Miffy’s brother Danny falls in love with Laura. He is her first real boyfriend. Of course, no future can ever come of it, two such different religions will never work out. But Laura and Danny are young and don’t worry about things like that. As their children are close, the parents become good friends as well. In some cases a little too close for comfort when Miffy and Daniel’s dad falls in love with Laura’s mom.

Worries

Now the worries they expressed over the relationship between Laura and Danny seem to fade, when their parents decide to get married. Laura’s dad has vanished years ago, Miffy’s parents break up. This is the end of a friendship that should’ve laste forever. Laura moves away with her new dad. Danny becomes her step brother and Miffy her step sister. Only now they don’t want to have anything to do with the daughter of the woman who stole their dad away from them.

Years

Years pass by, when Michael, their mutual dad, falls ill and needs an operation. When it seems like he won’t make it Laura and her mom need to contact his kids Miffy and Danny. In the meantime, Laura is married and has a daughter, Evie. Danny has married an orthodox jewish woman and has 5 children. When the two meet up again, there is still a spark between them. They fight it, but it seems more difficult the more often they meet.

Death

When father Michael dies, Miffy comes back for the funeral. How will their relationship unfold? Will they become friends again or will they be forever each other’s enemies? A quick read full of romance, jealousy, break-ups and finding lost time. I enjoyed it as a beach read.

Beth Miller

Beth Miller sees herself as ‘the tall blonde who writes’. Full of humor she tells us how many odd-jobs she’s had. In all walks of life. The best she is at drinking tea. She is the champion tea-drinker, according to her website. She can’t be any other than English of course. She’s written quite a few movies and two non-fiction books. She spends her time, when not writing, on teaching how to write.

Easter
4 April 2023

Easter

Just a few more days and we can celebrate Easter. It’s my very favorite holiday. Now I can hear you question me: ‘But wasn’t your favorite holiday Christmas?’ Sure, it is! I love Christmas, the lights, the warmth, the sappy movies, I love everything about Christmas. And yes, we celebrate the birth of Christ, which is pretty amazing. But when it comes to Easter, we’ve been given the most hopeful message of all.

Death

Jesus came to live with us, humans, as a human being. He was one of us. That was the purpose of His visit to earth. Simply put, He narrowed down the distance between us and God. Yes, He was the Son of God, but He taught us that we are all children of God. Men, women, animals, all living beings. We kind of take it for granted most of the time. Except when it comes to the story of the rising from the death of Jesus. Surely, His rising from death is not human. It must be God-like. No human can rise from death. Right? Right.

Example

Still, Jesus came to live with us, humans, as an example and a teacher. As He was one of us, how can we forget the most important part he taught us? That we, too, may live on forever? We, too, may rise from death when it’s our time. How magically wonderful is that! We don’t ever have to worry or wonder what will happen after we’re gone from this earth. Because Jesus gave us His answer. Spirit gave us His answer. It’s that simple and yet, it’s the most profound secret we ever learned.

Passing

With the passing of my mom we all sang ‘Thyne Be the Glory’. It was a comfort and a promise. This Easter we will sing it again. Trumpets will accompany us while we all sing together in church. I’m not a regular church goer but at Easter I make an exception. If just for this hymn. For to sing it out loud, with joy and conviction is a celebration of life.

Life

And yes, we celebrate life, every minute of it. With gusto and with gratitude. And when it’s our time to leave this earth we know we will live on. Some time ago it was promised that we, too, shall rise again. So don’t worry about a thing anymore. Celebrate! I wish everybody a very happy Easter!

Vibrations
21 February 2023

Vibrations

I’m reading a book about vibrations. It’s a splendid read but a little ‘out there’ at times. Not that I mind, ’cause I’d like to keep an open mind. Now I don’t know the first thing about physics. It’s magic to me. So whenever they start talking about matter not being ‘solid’, they kind of lose me. It’s interesting though that everything we see consists of vibrations and energy. Everything is changing, nothing stays the same.

Illusions

In this book we are told that everything is an illusion. Thoughts become things. I wonder. So, when I think of something I can make it come true. How? Just by thinking about it? Yes. And it also seems to help if you truly visualize it. Make it come true. Now I have heard people say ‘Be careful what you wish for, it may become truth’. That seems to be the same thing.

Nice

Wouldn’t it be nice if whatever we think about manifests itself somehow? Still how does it work when I think of something and my friend thinks about the same thing but reversed. Which thought will become reality? The book also states not to overthink things. Hmmm. I tend to put it away now. That seems too easy for me. Believe something unbelievable but don’t think about it.

And still

I’m curious about these things. There are some thoughts that sort of vibrate. They feel right somehow, deep inside. Other thoughts I’m not ready for. I dreamt the other night about being in a cave with singing and chanting monks. Their music vibrated. I actually saw waves going in and out of my body. Now what does this mean? When I overthink this I can’t find an answer. When I just let it be and enjoy the clean feeling it left me afterwards, that must be enough. Right? And still…

Illusion

What if everything is an illusion. How about if dreams are as real as when we are awake? What if we live simultaneously in separate dimensions? Oh the possibilities! The only true fact I know is that we ignore lots of opportunities. In whatever dimension we live. We are worried about small stuff. Instead of worrying about the big stuff I think I will take babysteps. Just enjoy any goo vibrations in my life and to not be afraid once in a while for something that seems to come my way, out of the blue.

Take a chance

I will take a chance more often. Even when I’m afraid, even when everybody tells me I will never make it happen. I will trust the vibrational energy that tells me; ‘Hey, you seem to be ready for this new adventure, won’t you take a chance?’

Better late than never
1 November 2022

Better late than never

Using to procrastinate I’m finally learning to tackle things right away. Especially things I worry about. This way, I am getting more and more in tune with life around me and within. I’ve been dreaming about walking a long-distance trail and after many, many years plans seem to materialize. Better late than never.

Friend

All due to a friend who’s a lot like me. We’ve been talking and talking about it and we even joined a gym at one point to make it happen. The training that is. To find ourselves sitting on the couch drinking wine in our training gear. Never even made it to the gym most times.

Fall

Als fall came upon us, we decided to turn a leaf ourselves. Might as well stay in the seasonal spirit. We are going to do it. We are going to walk the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. The whole way. Starting in France we will walk the 800 kilometers to the end in Spain. In 35 days.

Joke

Can we do this? We both agreed: No way! But that’s exactly why we would never even start. We listened to everyone around us telling us the same thing. You two? No way. We laughed but in the meantime we started to believe it would never happen. Until…

Until

We both read a very inspirational book. About two people starting to walk. They just took one step at a time and never stopped. They’re still walking.Yes, they’ve taken breaks in between their walks. But they just decided at one point they were going to do it and let nothing and nobody stand in their way.

Easy, peasy

Sounds easy. It wasn’t. And we are well aware of the fact that we are going to be in pain. That we will probably cry a lot. But we can also imagine the personal victory of making this dream come true. Of walking way beyond our imagination and f… any boundaries we set for ourselves all our lives.

Training

Walkin 25 kilometers every day for more than 30 days seems doable. Not without training however. So, we’ve started to go to the gym and not waste our memberships anymore. Since we are dead tired after 6 kilometers, we still have a way to go. That’s why we set our goal on September 2023. We must be fit enough by then to actually make it all the way.

Goal

And you know what? Setting this goal is extremely powerful. Already we’ve changed. We are already letting go of prejudice and of thoughts of failure. Of course we will. And we will show everybody, but most of all we will show ourselves that we can do anything we set our minds to. Even if it is late.

It is all about Communication and Ego!
5 October 2017

It is ALL about Communication and Ego…

Soloreizen met factor 50
17 March 2017
