Review The mark and the void – Paul Murray

Review The mark and the void – Paul Murray

In his book ‘The mark and the void’ Paul Murray describes the exciting work in the financial district of Dublin, Ireland. Claude grew up in France, but decides to try his luck in Dublin at an investment bank. He works long hours, sitting at his desk and talking to clients. It seems like a rather dull story but nothing is further from the truth.

Claude

Claude has one goal in mind: To make money. The void that comes with it doesn’t seem to bother him much. He’s on his office, doing what he does best. He is well liked by his co-workers and his employer. Swiftly going to the top and beyond he doesn’t think about happiness. Then one day everything is about to change.

Author

Claude is approached by the out of luck author Paul. Paul sees a story in the life of Paul. He wants to write a novel about a ‘regular working guy’ and finds in Claude exactly the man to fill that role. Claude isn’t impressed and refuses to let Paul in. However, he keeps thinking about the offer and eventually he gives in.

Difference

Paul couldn’t be more different than Claude. Where Claude lets his mind dictate his life, Paul is impulsive and lets life take over from common sense. He is the perfect candidate to advise Claude about his love life, being married himself to a beautiful trophy wife. The problem is that Claude doesn’t have time for love. Unless, that pretty waitress in the restaurant he goes to after work fancies him. Or does he finally realize that his coworker Is has had a crush on him for a long time now?

Humor

The story is full of wit and humor. Surprising twists and laugh out loud dialogues make this book a fast read. Even when the bank finds itself in a financial crisis, it’s not as bad as it looks. Maybe Claude will finally realize that all his money can make him a pretty wonderful life without having to work for 18 hour days anymore.

Paul Murray

Paul Murray was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father was professor, his mother a teacher. In university Paul studied English literature and creative writing. After a job in Barcelona as an English teacher, something he didn’t enjoy at all, he decided to write. Since then all his books received high praise and many awards.

Review To the top of the mountain – Arne Dahl
19 March 2023

Review To the top of the mountain – Arne Dahl

The book ‘To the top of the mountain’ is the third in its series. Maybe I should’ve started with the first. I know of this famous Swedish author but had never before read one of his books. I must admit that I found this one very confusing at first.

Halfway

This confusion stayed with me until well over halfway in the book. Now Scandinavian authors are known for their unpredictability and confusing stories. I must confess that this author made up for all this confusion at the end of his book. Arne Dahl is very well known. His books, including this one, have received numerous prizes. All his books have been made into movies. So who am I to doubt this story.

Finished

I muddled on. And yes, its very surprising and well thought out when all the, many, persons in the book come together in the end. I couldn’t see it happen, but it did. And how. The story begins with a stabbing in a pub. Football fans against each other. When the police interview the many witnesses, I never saw the significance between all of them.

Power and money

Yes, this crime story is all about money and power. But it goes a little deeper than that. Like his fellow Scandinavian authors, he gets to the core of relationships and seemingly insignificant banter. I slowly came to realize why this Arne Dahl is as famous and well loved as he is.

Arne Dahl

Born in 1963 in Sweden as Jan Arnald, he decided to use the name one Dahl for his books. Now I had heard of him before, who hasn’t, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a photo of him. OK, I admit I have a bit of a crush on Northern gentlemen, But wow. Does this make me superficial? Probably. I know his good looks have nothing to do with his writing. Still, he’s nice to look at. And in the end I really enjoyed his book. Especially its end. When I finally realized how the story was meant to confuse the reader and have this superb end.

Review The people at number 9 – Felicity Everett
12 March 2023

Review The people at number 9 – Felicity Everett

In te book ‘The people at number 9’ it’s all about relationships with your neighbors. It can be extremely important to have a good one. And in the street where Sara and Neil live with their 2 young boys it’s just like that. Everyone gets along fine.

Across the street

Sara and her family get along even better than fine with the neighbors across the street: Carol and Paul. They, like them, are well off, like to give small dinner parties and keep a pleasantly clean home. They are just ‘regular’ people and quite content with that.

Lou and Gavin

Then Lou and Gavin, with their three small children, move in next door to Sara and Neil. When Sara brings them a casserole to welcome them to the neighborhood she immediately senses something different about this family. Lou and Gavin are not just normal people, they are both Artists. Gavin is a well-known sculptor and Lou is a filmmaker. No wonder their house looks like garbage, every penny they had went into the studio basement.

Children

Here art is their life. The kids are left to roam free, no rules, no discipline. This takes some getting used to, but Sara finds herself soon overwhelmed with the wish to become like Lou. Neil, also, is very attracted to the new couple’s lifestyle. It doesn’t take long before they become best friends. Much to the chagrin of Carol from across the street.

Jealous

All due to jealousy, the two couples laugh it off. If they want to keep their old fashioned lifestyle then so be it. Not Sara and Neil who are changing their way of life into a much more creative one. Sara decides to be the writer she always wanted to be. Neil adjusts his work schedule to drink and smoke till late at night and go to music festivals.

Home schooling

It may be even time to take the boys from school, where they are drilled into good little copies of their class mates. Lou decides they will be homeschooled. Sara enthusiastically agrees. Now they will have a say in a more creative upbringing. Sara works days and nights on her computer to find just that thing. While Lou seems to be doing nothing.

No worries

No worries though. Lou knows lots of people who know people. And they can all chip in with arts and crafts. And in the meantime she also happens to know a very influential author who can help Sara publish her book once it’s finished. Lou and Gavin support the other two in a very well-meant way. And that is just it. They mean well. So how come Sara feels more and more burdened with the care taking of all the kids?

Mistaken

She must be mistaken. Lou and Gavin do everything they can to help them being more creative. And of course they need time to do their own work as well. Lou has her film premiere coming up and Gavin needs to work on his show in Budapest. It just takes some more time to get adjusted to a carefree way of life. Sara doesn’t need to vacuum the house once a week, after all.

Film

Lou’s film is a great success. Every critic and person there loves it. Sara has no idea what the film is about. But she’d rather die than admit her ignorance about short literary films. Especially when her Neil tells her he ‘totally got’ the story and its humor. She keeps her thoughts to herself that when there was humor people would have laughed.

Recognition

There may not have been humor in Lou’s film, but there is definitely lots of it in this book. Have you ever been to an artist party where everybody gushes over the artists work with words nobody understands, least of all themselves? Let alone a literary book promotion? And have you ever been to a party where one person wants to be better than the next and makes a fool of him/herself?

Be yourself

I just know we all have people like Lou and Gavin in our lives. And there is no judgment. The great thing is that they believe in themselves. They are who they are. They are real. You can’t help but feel grudging admiration for them. It’s the people around them that want to be like them, or like anybody else, that need to wake up. The author finds a great way to address this, very common, sense of self.

Review The Mountain Story – Lori Lansens
5 March 2023

Review The Mountain Story – Lori Lansens

‘The Mountain Story’, a title that grabbed me right away. I had to read this story, ’cause I love the mountains’. It would have to be a pretty bad author if she would disappoint. Honestly? I want to buy the book. I want to re-read it again and again. This is one of those gems you are just drawn to for some reason and will cherish for the rest of your life.

Wolf

Wolf, Wilfred for people who don’t know him, lost his mom when he was only four years old. He is left with Frankie, his father, whose only interests are booze en women. Oh, sure, he loves his son, but his urges for drink and sex are way stronger than to take care of this little boy. So when Frankie finds himself in trouble once again, he decides to move from Michigan to California. He takes his son and the few possessions and hits the road.

Librarian

Before they leave, the librarian who has felt sorry for Wolf, gives him a book and tells him to never ever eat a hallucinatic plant found in the area he moves to. The book tells Wolf about the mountain and he can’t wait to see it and climb and hike its many paths. When he gets to California he is dumped at a trailerpark with his aunt and lots and lots of cousins and all their small children.

Trapped

He feels trapped. But then he meets his best friend Byrd. They are kindred spirits. Byrd is part Native American and knows a lot about the Mountain. Wolf, a 16th part Cree, finds his soulmate in Byrd. So when Byrd loses his ‘self’ in an accident, Wolf decides to take his own life on his 18th birthday on the mountain, where he and Byrd used to hike so many times.

Fate

Fate decides differently, though. Mountains can be treacherous. No matter how many times you’ve been with them they can change within seconds. Never, ever, underestimate a mountain. Ever. This is what Wolf finds out when he tries to help three women who are lost. Nothing has prepared him for the fact that he will soon be lost with them.

Danger

No food, no water, hot days and very cold, freezing nights, bad weather, wildlife, they are tested with all the danger a mountain can provide. For five days they wander around, not knowing where to go or what to do. Will they survive? No, not all of them.

Mystic beauty

Maybe you need to be in the mountains to know that feeling, that mystic beauty and its whispers in the wind. The wind that finds ways around bolders and rocks. It seems to always want to tell you something. It whispers age old secrets to the rocks that we will never know. God’s country. But where is God when you need Him to lead the way? Maybe you will hear Him when you are still. He will test you and give you answers when you truly listen and let go of everything that does not matter.

Lori Lansens

Born in 1960, In Canada, she was a screenwriter before writing novels. She moved to Los Angeles. Married with children, she finds the time to write screenplays and novels which received numerous prizes. Her books tend to feature subject like religion and sex. Her writing style in ‘The Mountain Story’ is very respectful, insightful and magical.

Review Dreamtown – David Baldacci
26 February 2023

Review Dreamtown – David Baldacci

The number three in the series with private investigator Archer is called ‘Dreamtown’, after the tinseltown of Los Angeles. Stories with Archer are set in the ’50s, right after WW2. Los Angeles is just starting to be the number one town in movies. Archer finds himself in Hollywood surrounded by upcoming movie stars.

Archer

Now if you’ve read the first two books with Archer you will know that he is not impressed by all this Hollywood glitter and glamour. As long as he has food to eat and a place to sleep he is more than content with his life. Now all of a sudden he has to appear at parties where he doesn’t know anybody and where everybody seems only interested in money and speaking to the ‘right’ people. People who can help them get even more money.

Missing

When a woman approaches him during one of those parties to ask him to work for her in finding out who wants to kill her, he is at first reluctant. But when he finds a dead body in her home with her nowhere to be found he gets intrigued. Before he knows it he finds himself in the middle of a drugs- and people trade by a maffia group.

Maffia

Now everybody knows to stay well away from those guys. Not Archer though. He made a promise and he will keep it, if it costs him his life. Fortunately he always seems to escape at the last minute. But there are enough dead bodies and there is enough tension to keep it interesting.

Suspense

And though you can guess the outcome, there are enough surprises to want to read ‘just one more chapter’ before going to sleep. David Baldacci is a master in suspense. He must keep an extensive folder to not confuse all the personalities he uses in his numerous books. Although I’m partial to his ‘political’ books, I actually love all his characters and his writing style.

David Baldacci

I had the pleasure of meeting mr. Baldacci in Utrecht, when he did a promotional tour in Europe. He took his time to answer all my questions (and they were many) and was exceptionally charming and friendly in giving me some tips on how to write a book, but maybe even more importantly in how to get it published once it’s finished. His best advice was to never ever give up. It sounds easy enough, but believe me, it’s not. No writer is secure enough to just get the story out there. It took him more then 12 publishers before he found one that gave him a shot. And look at him now.

Wish you well Foundation

David Baldacci is not just an allround nice guy. He’s also an intelligent one. He and his wife Michelle founded the ‘Wish you well Foundation’. A foundation against illiteracy. A cause close to my heart. Yes, there are many great foundations helping people all over the world. But one of the most important things is to help people learn how to read. Reading is knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is ending hunger, war, poverty.

Review Hazards of time travel -Joyce Carol Oates
12 February 2023

Review Hazards of time travel – Joyce Carol Oates

I’ve been a fan of Joyce Carol Oates for years, but ‘Hazards of time travel’ may be my very favorite so far. After the horror of 9/11 the world has changed rapidly. New rules apply, to make it very easy for everyone to understand. You do as you’re told or you will be eliminated or teletransported to another place and time to undergo educational brainwashing.

New world

With a wink to ‘brave new world’ the author describes a new world where the United States are now the Northern States of America. They include Mexico and Canada. And finally Alaska is where it belongs, joined with the States. The president of these Northern States is democratically chosen by way of money. As is the case in our time, the one with most money and assets wins. No need for expensive campaigns anymore, where we all know the outcome: the more money, the more your chances of winning.

Adriane Strohl

Adriane is a 17 year old who did very well in high school. Too well, ’cause now she stands out, and Nobody wants to stand out. She’s chosen to be valedictorian. In her speech she, innocently, questions her history (our history) of whatever happened before 9/11. She cannot even finish her speech when she’s taken by police and without saying goodbye to her family and friends she’s banned from her world and teletransported to a college in 1959. She gets a new name: ‘Mary Ellen’ and must forget all about her old life.

Lonely

With a list of everything she must and especially must never do, she feels very lonely in her new environment. Although her roommates are friendly and want to help her fit in, she doesn’t trust anyone. Besides, she has this list of which she needs to take care. Of all the things she must never ever do is to try and get attention. She walks around campus like a shadow. The only time she feels a bit better is when she attends psychology class 101.

Professor

She feels very drawn to her professor Ira Wolfman. In fact, she can’t help but fall in love with him. Something forbidden according to the list. And her professor seems to avoid her at all cost. Until one day he all of a sudden asks her to follow him to a hidden place where, according to him, nobody will be able to hear or see them. He confides in her he is banned as well and only has to be there for another two years before assessment. He doesn’t want to do anything to jeopardize his chances of going back home, so he urges her to be very careful.

Comfort

Still they can’t help being comforted by each other. Ira Wolfman is wise enough not to get into a sexual relationship with ‘Mary Ellen’. The more they talk about their old lives, the more homesick they become. Will they get up the courage to elope? Could it be, this time travel does not exist and Mary Ellen is hypnotized? Or maybe this is just one long dream, is she living separate lives in different dimensions? As the exceptional author she is, Joyce Carol Oates will not really tell us how this story evolves, but we may guess. And it’s up to every individual how you think this story may end.

Joyce Carol Oates

Born in New York, USA, in 1938, the author has written more than 60 books. She won many prizes, except for one very prestigious one: The nobel prize for literature. She has my vote! Her extensive research and studies into the identity of humankind, her intelligence and fantasy, and her beautiful writing makes it more than worthwhile to read this book.

Review The disappearance of Stephanie Mailer – Joël Dicker
29 January 2023

Review The disappearance of Stephanie Mailer – Joël Dicker

The book ‘The disappearance of Stephanie Mailer’ starts with Jesse Rosenberg celebrating his going away party at the police station. He has decided that he wants to do something else with his life, something he has thought of for years. Now it’s time to say goodbye to his old job. He gets lots of compliments from all the big bosses. They call him the 100% man, meaning that he finished each and every case with a grade of 100 %.

Disappearance

There is one person at the party, however, who disagrees. She tells him his very first case has never been solved. The person he arrested was not the perp, somewhere someone is still living a free life, while being a murderer. He doesn’t believe her and gets angry. But when Stephanie Mailer disappears he rethinks her theory. What did she know that he didn’t and was she right? He visits his old colleague and friend and they both decide to re-open this old case.

Twenty years ago

It all happened 20 years ago, on July 30, 1994, when the new theatre was opened. The mayor of the town and his family, was murdered. Soon after they found the murderer, but during his arrest he was killed. Case closed. Now, exactly 20 years later they re-open the case and with this a whole can of worms is opened as well.

Personal lives

We get to know the characters’ personal lives page by page. It reads like a thrilling novel. Slowly everything comes together. But til the very last page we still don’t know who the murderer was and is… The hardcover book of 633 pages is hard to put down. It took me about a week to finish, but I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Very well written with so many twists to the story, I felt a little bereft when I finished it.

Joël Dicker

Fortunately the author Joël Dicker wrote more books. He was born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studied law. When he started to write, his first novel got him so many prizes, all his other books were translated into 30 different languages as well. Please check him out! You won’t regret it.

Review The Lake Shore limited – Sue Miller
22 January 2023

Review The Lakeshore limited – Sue Miller

The Lake Shore Limited is both the title of this book and the title of the play one of the characters in the book decides to write. The lives of the four main characters are all changed by the events from 9/11. Each in a different way but no one will ever forget what it meant for the rest of their lives on that black day in history.

Billy

Billy’s boyfriend, Gus, left the house early that morning. After kissing her goodbye he hopped on the fatal flight to go to a funeral, not knowing it would be his final trip. Billy is devastated by the loss, but maybe even more so by having to live the lie for the rest of her life. She meant to break up with Gus after he returned form his trip. Now she is the bereaved window and feeling like a fraud. She writes a play to divert her thoughts.

Leslie

Leslie was Gus’s sister. In the time Gus and Billy were lovers she and Billy became best friends. Now she grieves the loss of her brother. Who else to turn to, than her best friend Billy? After all, for al Leslie knows Billy is as sad as she is. Until she sees her play and understands.

Sam

Sam is Leslie’s new neighbor when he buys the house next to her for his wife. After he renovates the whole place his wife leaves him. Sam and Leslie become fast friends and maybe even a little more than just friends. Until Sam meets Billy and falls head over heels in love.

Rafe

Rafe is the main character in the play Billy wrote. But Rafe has his own marriage problems. He puts his heart and soul in his acting. With his exceptional talent he brings everybody together. The missing pieces of questions never before answered fall into place. So does this play have a happy end? And if so, does that mean that the book ends well too?

Writing

Beautifully written, the author honestly describes the impact this awful day has on just four characters in the book. With respect and love she remembers hereby what it meant for the rest of the world. The day we all thought this was the end of life as we knew it. And it was. Without being sentimental she perfectly describes the lives after.

Sue Miller

Sue Miller grew up in Chicago. As a single parent she had to work hard and taught creative writing for years before she started writing her own books. Now she’s written more than 10 books, most of them bestsellers. The Senator’s wife is one of her most beloved books. But please don’t leave ‘The Lake Shore Limited‘ on the bookshelf. It’s well worth the read.

Review The Wildflowers – Harriet Evans
8 January 2023

Review The Wildflowers – Harriet Evans

This book “The Wildflowers” called out to me while I was browsing the local library. A perfect ‘winter’book, to curl up with when the rain is pelting down the windows. The Wildflowers is a story about a tight family that falls apart. But before they do they have many adventures in their beach house. Cordelia Wilde grows up in this very loving family. How can something this good become this bad?

Young

Cordelia and her brother Ben look forward to go to the beach house to spend their summers there, with their parents Tony and Althea. It’s the very best time of the year. Their parents are both actors and don’t spend much time with their children, except during the summer days. They also invite lots of friends over and it’s one big party all summer long.

Madeleine

One day they find a scrawny looking child looking in the window. After the initial shock they find out more about Madeleine. Mads has an abusive father, so she spends much time with this loving family. All her dreams seem to come true, when the parents decide she must spend as much time with them as if she were part of the family.

Past and present

The book jumps back and forth between past and present. We learn more and more about the secrets lying in Tony’s past. Whatever happened with his aunt who took care of him when he was a child? And what all happened in the beach hut that nobody knows about?

Decades

Decades go by, the family has drifted apart. Until Ben’s children take it upon themselves to visit their aunt Cordelia (Cords) to find out why. Of course the book has a happy ending, but not before there are many secrets revealed and many oohs and aahhhs exclaimed.

Harriet Evans

The author Harriet Evans lives and works in London. She worked for a publisher for years until she decided to write her own books. Het first ever book ‘Going home’ was an instant bestseller. She has written more than 35 books since.

Review The whale at the end of the world – John Ironmonger
1 January 2023

Review The whale at the end of the world – John Ironmonger

On this first day of the new year I would like to introduce you to one of the best books ever written. The title ‘The whale at the end of the world’ suggests a bit of a depressive story. What do you mean, the end of the world? It’s not as bad as it sounds. On the contrary. What a well-written story.

Sleepy town

The sleepy village St. Piran on the English coast is shocked by two events at the same day. First they find a huge whale seemingly lost in the big ocean. It swims dangerously close to the shore. Will it survive? Then upon further investigation some villagers find a naked man on the beach. It looks like he’s dead, but fortunately he still has some breath left. They pick him up and haul him over to the retired doctor of the village.

Joe Haak

The man, Joe Haak, gets better and tells a little of his story, though not all. He is an investment banker who has invented a special computerprogram that can predict the future. His boss wants him to use the program for the business, though Joe is reluctant. It doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, yet. And sure enough, the business crashes and loses billions of dollars.

Flight

Joe is held responsible and flees to the little village that nobody knows and where nobody can find him. There he makes lots of friends and falls in love. He wants to stay forever. Away from the big bad world that insists on surviving by the power of money. But what do you do when money becomes worthless? What if, say a pandemic breaks out all over the world?

Right

This book was written well before we ever heard of Corona, except in the brand of beer. In this book a flu pandemic is on its way and destroys everything and everybody in its hunger for victims. Joe relies on his computerprogram and takes charge. In order to save his new home and its population of 308, he has a plan.

Message

And what about the whale? The book comes with a hopeful message for mankind. Without any sentiment or sappy stories the author describes the best case scenario. And the only way we can survive. Only when we all work together and care for each other will we all make it. Not just a few, but everyone as long as we work together.

John Ironmonger

Not surprisingly this book has won several awards and has been an international bestseller. Translated in more then 13 languages, it seems that we all agree on this positive message. The author has written more literary novels and I can’t wait to read more. In any case, you really don’t want to miss out on this beauty.
